Family Adventures Aboard a 54-Foot Home

We are a family living and working year-round while traveling the Mediterranean aboard our 54ft rebuilt sailboat.

Andy, originally from the UK, has had a lifelong passion for life on the water. His dream of living on a boat began at 17 when he cruised the waters of North Wales. Hiba, from Syria, had little experience with the sea until they bought their first sailboat in Europe—a Moody 336—which they used for summer cruising around the western Mediterranean. Moose, their five-year-old son, is the youngest member of the crew.

Hiba works remotely four days a week for an energy systems company, while Andy hosts The Ocean Cruisers Podcast, the most popular podcast for cruising enthusiasts. He also organizes the Odyssey Sailing Festival. Together, they homeschool Moose while embracing their adventurous lifestyle.

Their dream of full-time boat life began four years ago when they planned to purchase a Jeanneau 54DS and turn it into their permanent home. After navigating some challenges, they found a less-than-perfect boat that required nine months of intensive work to make seaworthy.

Comfort is essential for living full-time on a boat as a family. Managing daily activities like using the dishwasher, ice maker, Starlink, washing machine, TV, or Hiba’s PlayStation, while balancing energy needs, is no small feat. That’s why they depend on a robust energy system, powered by 900 amp hours of Super B Epsilon 150 batteries. This system provides a steady 5 to 10 days of reserve power, depending on usage.

Their batteries are charged by a 1.4kW solar array. During the winter, when solar energy is limited, they supplement with a Honda EU32i generator to ensure consistent power.

Now in their second year of full-time boat living, their Super B energy system has proven to be reliable, with zero failures—a must for an off-grid lifestyle.
